(11:45AM - 12:30PM) - Panel: Assessment from the trenches - Where we are today
The Leahy-Smith America Invents Act (AIA) was signed into law over seven years ago.
This panel of global IP experts will discuss the impact of the AIA since then including
the impact of AIA on patent quality, how post-grant PTAB proceedings are changing
intellectual property, and whether the AIA’s impact is consistent with the intent of the
law, as well as other IP protections. The panel will also discuss possible congressional
action with respect to §101 patent eligibility, licensing in a post-Lexmark world, and
industrial design protection post-Apple v. Samsung. Finally, the panel will address how
the US addressing the challenges associated with IP protection differently than other
major world economies including China, Europe, and Korea. –Panel includes Hon. Paul Michel (formerly Chief Judge of the CAFC), Hon. Randall Rader (formerly Chief Judge of the CAFC), and Hon. David Kappos (formerly Director, USPTO), Dick Thurston (formerly General Counsel, TSMC), with moderator Phil Johnson (formerly Senior VP for IP Policy & Strategy, Johnson & Johnson).

Listen to recent experiences of Laurie Self (Vice President and Counsel, Government Affairs, Qualcomm), Manny Schecter (Chief Patent Counsel, IBM), Bryce Pilz (Director of Licensing, University of Michigan), Jeffrey Cicarella (Counsel, Cleveland Clinic), and Aaric S. Eisenstein (VP, Personalized Media Communications) as they discuss the impact of current US IP policy on their organizations. Kim Chotkowski, (CEO, LES USA & Canada) will moderate this panel discussion.

A special “fireside chat”-style session which will allow for opening statements and then interaction among the panelists and with the audience. The panel will include Senator Chris Coons(D-DE), Congressman Steve Stivers (R-OH), and the Hon. Andrei Iancu, Director, USPTO with former USPTO Director Q. Todd Dickinson moderating.
